At UPS, the students are known as “The Loggers” and their mascot (a hatchet wielding grizzly bear) is known as “Grizz.”

The mascot was once a real logger but there was a controversy over whether or not a bearded man should represent a school whose women’s sports teams were historically better than the men’s.

Now we have the adorable and cuddly Grizz, who is still a logger and apparently spends his free time destroying his own habitat.

If there is one thing that the Loggers are good at, it’s being terrible at football. They consistently get beat by at least forty points per game and that’s pretty bad, considering that they only play against a bunch of other schools that you’ve never heard of.

However, they aren’t terrible at all sports. The Men’s Ultimate Frisbee Team has done well on a national level as well as the Women’s Soccer, Swimming and Volleyball teams. Go Loggers!

If you’ve ever lived in the north end of Tacoma you are undoubtedly familiar with UPS and its students. The Loggers live among us; renting houses from 6th ave to Proctor.

Every year, we get to watch as new students move in and become a part of our community for four exciting years, during which time they proceed to invade our favorite bars and restaurants, leave their trash in our yards and have loud parties right down the street from my house until 4am.

Here in the north end, we know that summer has officially arrived by the collection of couches placed on the sidewalk from students moving out of their houses and going back home.

Never mind that the city will pick up that couch for free, just throw it out there and hope that someone will happen upon it and think, “whoa! A perfectly good couch from the mid 80’s that was used by a house full of college kids! I totally need that!”

Yes, Tacoma’s north end just wouldn’t be the same without The University of Puget Sound. In its 129 years it has given us alumni such as Champion bagpiper Jori Chisolm, Scooterhorsey’s Gregory Red, TV Batman Adam West, serial killer Ted Bundy and Rick Motherfucking Steves.

Churning out talent like that is hard work and we hope that UPS can give us many more great people in the coming years.

Thanks, Loggers!

(Stop throwing empty beer bottles in my yard. You know who you are, UPS kid with with badly grown-in beard and highwaters who rides the rusty red 10 speed that is in dire need of chain lube.)
